Chef Sanjeev Kapoor discusses importance of clean cooking with industry leaders, showcases innovative technologies
Hosted by the Clean Cooking Alliance, the event also marked the start of a new behavior change communications campaign in India

Influential leaders and heads of organizations from across India came together in Mumbai to discuss the importance of clean cooking solutions and to recognize some of the most innovative cooking technologies on the market today.

Hosted by the Clean Cooking Alliance (the “Alliance”), the event at the Taj Lands End Hotel kicked off with a conversation between Dymphna van der Lans, Alliance CEO; Sanjeev Kapoor, Chef Extraordinaire and member of the Alliance Chef Corps; Narayana Murthy, Founder of Infosys; and Prasoon Joshi, CEO and CCO of McCann Worldgroup India. The speakers shared some of their personal motivations for working with the Alliance to promote the use of cleaner, more modern stoves and fuels.

“Since cooking has given me so much, what I can give back is not just quality food, but also my expertise and reach,” said ChefKapoor. “I used to think that cooking was just about food, something that could bring joy. But the trouble with it – the fact that it can kill – was an eye-opener. I didn’t want to sleep quietly with the fact that something that brings me so much joy can also kill.”

In India, over 789 million people – nearly 60 percent of the population – depend on polluting, open fires or inefficient stoves to cook their food. Nearly half a million deaths each year are linked to exposure to toxic smoke from cooking and heating.

“Research shows that using traditional stoves reduces the birth weight of a child,” noted Mr. Murthy. “If we want our children to be strong, to be healthy, to get a good education, we need to take good care of mothers. And one dimension of that is making sure they have a modern contraption for cooking.”

“I’m very passionate about energy services and how they make people’s lives better,” said Mrs. Van der Lans. “My vision is about the effective use of power. No one’s life should be limited by how they cook. It’s really important to think about the next phase of technology and innovation, and I see that opportunity here in India.”

“Where we can contribute is by telling stories,” said Mr. Joshi, whose company is working with the Alliance and other partners to implement a new behavior change campaign in Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat. “If we can inspire by telling stories of people whose lives have been transformed by clean cooking, then not only policymakers and financial institutions but people themselves will realize what a big difference clean cooking can make.”

Mr. Joshi also unveiled the new Hindi slogan for the campaign, for which the approximate English translation is, “As the smoke is disappearing, progress is appearing.” This aims to motivate people across India through the clean cooking campaign, which is a joint effort by the Alliance, Shell, Tata Trusts, McCann WorldGroup, Sambodhi, Nexleaf Analytics, DharmaLife, and SEWA.

The discussion was followed by a cooking demonstration by Chef Kapoor, who prepared a variety of dishes using several of the clean cooking technologies exhibited. The demonstration included products by Greenway Appliances, Envirofit, Wonder Chef, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd., and the Indian Institute of TechnologyBombay, representing technologies powered by solar energy, electric induction, liquified petroleum gas, charcoal, and wood.

CHEF SANJEEV KAPOOR HOSTED COOKING DEMONSTRATION AND
LAUNCHED BEHAVIOR CHANGE CAMPAIGN AROUND CLEAN COOKING IN INDIA

The Clean Cooking Alliance along with Tata Trusts and other partners launched its pilot project of Alliance’s behavior change campaign at the Taj Land’s End Hotel, Mumbai on January 31st, 2019 from 03:30- 05:00 pm.
The event commenced with a cooking demonstration using clean cooking solutions by Celebrity Chef Mr. Sanjeev Kapoor. The event not only featured a Q&A between Chef Sanjeev Kapoor and Alliance CEO Dymphna van der Lans, it also marked the launch of the Alliance’s behavior change campaigns in Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat. Over the next six months, these campaigns will promote the use of cleaner, more modern stoves and fuels that can improve health, protect the climate and environment, empower women, and help families save time and money.
Over 789 million people in India comprising nearly 60 percent of the population depend on polluting, open fires or inefficient stoves to cook their food, harming health, the climate, and environment. The exposure to household air pollution from cooking is a leading risk factor for various diseases, especially amongst pregnant women and children.
This urgent need to tackle the deadly effects of household air pollution brought  together Master Chef Sanjeev Kapoor, Infosys Co-founder Narayan Murthy, Clean Cooking Alliance CEO Dymphna van der Lansand other prominent leaders to raise awareness about the impacts of cooking over polluting open fires and inefficient stoves. These leaders highlighted the stark reality that household air pollution from cooking and heating contributes to the deaths of nearly half a million Indians every year, and disproportionately affects women and girls.
The Alliance  and Tata Trusts through their pilot projects in UP and Gujarat, aim to address millions of Indian women and their families, who are suffering from multiple health and lifestyle issues because of cooking over polluting, open fires or inefficient stoves. This behavior change program will encourage people shift to clean cooking solutions that are cleaner and equipped with more modern stoves and fuels to reduce pollution and health hazards.

During the event, Chef Sanjeev Kapoor also discussed with other participants how the Alliance, the India Leadership Council, and clean cooking businesses are trying to bring greater investment into this sector. He also facilitated a demonstration of the clean cooking technologies promoted by various companies and organizations to spread the message that clean cooking must be accessible to all.
Sanjeev Kapoor, Master Chef says “This platform was a great opportunity for me to exercise my social responsibilities and raise awareness about the harmful health, climate, environment, and gender impacts of cooking over polluting open fires and inefficient stoves. As a culinary expert and renowned chef, it becomes my responsibility to inspire millions of Indians and help CCA in creating a healthy and sustainable environment by opting for clean cooking devices”.
Narayan Murthy Co-founder of Infosys says “My siblings and I have watched our mother cooking breakfast, lunch and dinner using woodstove and the poor lady had to work very hard. If country like India has to redeem the dreams of Mahatma Gandhi, then India has to work on health, education, nutrition and clean energy including for cooking".
About the Clean Cooking Alliance- The Clean Cooking Alliance (the “Alliance”) works with a global network of partners to build an inclusive industry that makes clean cooking accessible to the three billion people who live each day without it. Established in 2010, the Alliance is driving consumer demand, building a pipeline of investible businesses, and fostering an enabling environment that allows the sector to thrive.
Benefits of clean cooking -Clean cooking transforms lives by improving health, protecting the climate and environment, and helping families save time and money.

About the India Leadership Council- Members of the Council are influential leaders, corporate CEOs, and heads of organizations from across India who have come together to raise awareness around cleaner, more modern stoves and fuels; attract investment; spur broader engagement from the private sector; and highlight India’s expertise in addressing the clean cooking issue. The financial and strategic support from India Leadership Council members enables the Alliance to accelerate efforts to achieve universal access to clean cooking solutions in India.

Shrishti (Sapna), Ranveer (Vikrant), Gaurav (Zuber) & Avni (Anju), are childhood friends belonging to different strata of society, but their innocence fails to see the class difference. Shrishti’s father, an honest teacher, committed suicide when falsely implicated in a question-paper scam and she was forced to leave the city. Ranveer was also forced to leave his city along with her mother, after it was found that his father was secretly married to another woman and had an illegitimate son. Thus, the friends were separated in the early days.
After some years, all the four friends reunited when they admitted in the same college and the friendship bondage once again sprung up like their childhood. They used to hang together, had fun and shared their thoughts and aims of lives amongst themselves. While Shiristi wanted to become an IPS officer (which was eventually the turning point of the movie), Ranveer wanted to join politics to fight his father, Gaurav wanted to become super rich and Avni simply planned to take the short-cut route to happiness by marrying an ‘already very rich’ guy. However, in the final year of the college, when Ranveer decided to contest the election for college president, he found Gaurav as of one of the contesting candidates. Surprisingly, Gaurav won the election and as an aftereffect, Ranveer decided to avenge his defeat in the hard way. As a result, the bond of friendship was broken and the four friends took separate ways in their lives.
However, at the end, some very stronger reasons developed in the story that eventually, brought all the four together again and this time, with a far bigger purpose and a greater cause. They decided to counter the evil head-on and annihilate it at the cost of everything humanly possible for them. What they decided and what they did finally, constitute the climax of the film.
