Bharat Petroleum bags FICCI award for sustainability in the Petrochemical Sector

·         Company won the award for ‘Petroleum Sludge Valorisation’ process under the category ‘Sustainability award for the best green process in the petrochemical sector’

Mumbai, March 22, 2021: Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), a ‘Maharatna’ and a Fortune Global 500 Company bagged a prestigious award from the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) under the category ‘Sustainability award for the best green process in the petrochemical sector’. The Company received the award for ‘Petroleum Sludge Valorisation’, a novel concept of valorizing tank bottom sludge and renewable biomass and generating a versatile solid fuel. Dr. Chiranjeevi Thota, Deputy General Manager (R&D) received the award on behalf of the Company, which was conferred by Mr. Mansukh Mandviya, Hon’ble Union Minister of State, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, Mr. Yogendra Tripathi, Secretary, Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals and Deepak Mehta-Chairman, FICCI Chemical Committee, and C&MD Deepak Nitrate Ltd.

The solid fuel ‘Petrolet’ that is formed after the process of combining two waste materials has numerous applications in low-cost conventional heating, steam generation, etc. Another advantage of this process is that it is environmental-friendly as the mixture of the oily sludge and bio-mass is then used in firing the kilns thereby replacing the requirement of high-cost conventional fuel. Due to this process, several thousand tonnes of petroleum sludge generated in refineries is used in gasifiers as a feedstock, thereby reducing wastage. The final product possesses a calorific value that is at par with coal used for furnace applications. This fuel mixture can be used as such or can be co-fired with coal or liquid fuels to enhance its heat value.

The oil sludge generated by refineries is one of the major sources of environmental pollution and is categorized as hazardous waste by Environment Protection Act and Hazardous Wastes Handling Rules. Bharat Petroleum’s Corporate Research & Development Centre developed this concept to replace the earlier process of bio-remediated sludge that used to take 6-10 months and was very expensive. Through this new process, the Company’s R&D team has not only came up with quick and environmentally acceptable solutions; but also made it cost-effective compared to the earlier processes.

Fashionable clothes, fancy cars- all had a permanent place in the life of Dawood Ibrahim”- says actor Ashwat Kanth

“You win half the battle if you look your character” says Ashwat Kanth, the newest Dawood Ibrahim of Bollywood.

In RGV’s underworld, characters are real. From adapting the nuances to looking exactly like their part, actors manage to create a world so realist for the audience that they become a part of it.

Such is Ashwat’s character of Dawood. He describes the film as an in depth, detailed journey of a young boy from Dongri to becoming the most wanted man in the world who runs the biggest crime empire-  D Company.

“We have kept the styling of my character very real. You will see the change as and when the story proceeds. From a boy in pant and shirt from Dongri to this man with the most fashionable wardrobe and lavish lifestyle” says Ashwat.

Renowned Carnatic Violinist, Composer, and Guru Smt. Vasantha Kannan releases a unique Thillana with daughter and disciple Calcutta K. Srividya and son Mohan Kannan

Mumbai, 17th March 2021: Renowned and leading Carnatic Classical violinist, composer, and Guru, Smt Vasantha Kannan releases a Thillana with daughter and disciple Calcutta K. Srividya and son Mohan Kannan. The composition, performed by the trio with Smt Vasantha Kannan and Calcutta K Srividya both on vocals as well as violin, and Mohan Kannan providing support through guitar and backing vocals, has brought out a unique experience for the audience.

This is the first-ever known classical composition in the rare raagam, Kadyutha Ganthi.

Thillana is a rhythmic piece in Carnatic music that is generally performed at the end of a concert and also widely used in classical Indian dance performances. The presence of Jatis (or bols) for the most part of the Thillana clearly distinguishes it from other composition formats. Jatis and swarams constitute the pallavi, anupallavi, and the latter part of the charanam, while lyrics form the initial part of the charanam.

Smt Vasantha Kannan’s Thillana (Kadyutha Ganthi Raagam, Adi Thaalam), while following the traditional format, is presented with a progressive approach of blending guitar and harmonies, a concept more common in western or popular music.

Speaking about the overall Thillana, Smt. Vasantha Kannan shares, “The idea of this Thillana came to me as I was exploring the rare melodious ragam Kadyutha Ganthi which fascinated me. Since there are no known compositions in this ragam, I have brought in the basic structure of the ragam through the arohanam and avarohanam as part of the lyrics of the Thillana itself. I'm very happy with the way the composition has turned out and I am doubly happy about having my children with me on the Thillana.”

Speaking about the association with her mother and brother, Calcutta K. Srividya shares, “It was a fantastic, enjoyable experience doing this with my mother and brother! We saw Amma compose the whole thillana in just 2 days.. and the fun started when the three of us had innumerable conversations to come up with this format and to record and shoot the whole thing at home in the current scenario!”

Sharing his views, singer and composer Mohan Kannan says, “This is one of the most gratifying experiences of my life, to be working with my mother and sister on a song that is purely classical and can still appeal to listeners from all over the world. It was challenging and exciting at the same time to try and introduce guitars and harmonies into the Thillana without compromising the purity of the composition or the Raagam.”

Rashana Shah helms ‘Nanda Devi’ South Asian cinema gets a new leaf through international collaborations for South Asian-themed content

Rashana Shah helms  ‘Nanda Devi’ South Asian cinema gets a new leaf through international collaborations for South Asian-themed content.

With cinematic production of Uttarakhand Tragedy Rashaana Shah, of Mulberry Films join hands with Asad Sultan, CEO, Deutsche Malayan Ventures to produce international film and TV projects

Human tragedies and natural disasters have been time-tested themes for cinema. They never fail on the box office and when these themes have controversies roped in these are true recipes for box-office success.

Nanda Devi disaster has recently been in the headlines because of the tragic glacier burst in Uttarakhand, India, that resulted in the deaths of at least fifty people. However, there’s more than what meets the eye. In 1965, the United States and India collaborated, in one of CIA’s most secretive missions, an attempt to install a listening device at 25,000 feet on the mountain peak to monitor the nearby Chinese nuclear test site. The listening device was powered by highly radioactive plutonium and was lost during the expedition.  It has been speculated that it may be the cause of the recent glacier melt in Uttarakhand. The disaster is being adapted as a film named ‘Nanda Devi’.

This film is being produced and envisioned by Asad Sultan, CEO of Deutsche Malayan Ventures, and Rashaana Shah, Managing Director of Mulberry Films who have joined hands to produce International Films and TV Projects.

“After a decade of persistent efforts to get South Asian-themed premium content in front of mainstream global audiences, during which time, Rashaana and Mulberry Film have been constant collaborators, we are confident the time for this cultural expression is here and now, and our new initiative is determined to contribute to it with our own storytelling,” said Asad Sultan.

“Asad introduced us to Scott Rosenfelt, who owned the life rights of three climbers. It is a compelling man vs mountain saga,” says Rashaana.

Scott Rosenfelt, one of Hollywood’s most successful independent producers, has also produced as well as written Nanda Devi. Rosenfelt has films like Home Alone, Smoke Signals, Mystic Pizza, Teen Wolf and Extremities, and the most recent, Critical Thinking (an early selection of the 2020 SXSW Film Festival for its world premiere) under his belt. He has garnered international acclaim and recognition for his work till now.

The film will reportedly be shot across various locations including New Zealand, Alaska and India.

Regarding some of Mulberry’s bolder book acquisitions, Ms. Shah, who holds a degree in computer science and is a former actress herself, says, “I feel obliged to tell stories through the medium of cinema even if they’re controversial. It’s a way of giving a voice to those who are unheard.”

She recently produced feature films blowing up Right Now and A New Christmas. Her future projects include The Collaborator, a war drama with Konstantin Bojanov attached to direct, and Purple America, based on the best-selling novel by Rick Moody with Yan England attached to direct.

One of the other movies Asad is producing this year with Mulberry is The Collaborator. It’s an adaptation of a prize-winning, international bestselling book by Mirza Waheed, told as a coming-of-age war story about a 17-year-old boy caught between India and Pakistan in a long-suffering border war over set in 1989. The Collaborator was the debut novel of Mirza Waheed.

Asad and veteran show-runner Sailesh Dave is also developing a period-based noir thriller set in the 1960s around India’s nuclear program under Dr. Homi Bhabha. The premium series project is based on Braham’s Singh’s best-selling novel “Bombay Swastika”.

Dave is known for co-producing an independent slacker film Sulemani Keeda, famous television shows like Movers and Shakers, and The Great Indian Comedy Show. He has also created and produced a series of spoof features for the MTV Network.

Other Indian-themed projects in development are “Khatarnaak” a hip-hop-themed dramatic series, and “Twilight in Delhi” a dramatization of the early 20th-century novel of the same name.
