The once-thriving New Egerton Woollen Mill in Dhariwal, Punjab, has been struggling to keep its doors open for the past several years. Amidst the chaos and uncertainty, the mill's labourers have been left high and dry, waiting for their unpaid salaries since 2017. With the central government finally intervening, there's a glimmer of hope for the employees that relies on the mill for their livelihood.
The New Egerton Woollen Mill, situated in Dhariwal, Punjab, was once a leading name in the Indian textile industry. However, the fortunes of the mill took a turn for the worse. The financial woes of the New Egerton Woollen Mill have had a direct impact on the lives of its employees. As of June 30, 2017, there were 417 workers at the mill. Since then, 276 have retired, leaving 141 employees still on the rolls. However, the workers have not received their salaries leaving them struggling to make ends meet.
In 2019, Member of Parliament Sunny Deol intervened in this matter and played a crucial role in bringing the plight of the mill workers to the forefront. He met Union Textiles Minister Piyush Goyal in Delhi for this matter. In this meeting the minister was apprised of the difficulties faced by the mill workers and Sunny Deol urged the government to clear their pending dues for the swift resolution of the case.
The existing and retired employees of New Egerton Woollen Mills located in Dhariwal town of Gurdaspur will soon be handed over their dues by the government. They have received assurance from Union Textiles Minister Piyush Goyal in this regard. The workers after 6 long years of battle can see a light at the end of the tunnel, employees' bills are being prepared and the balance amount is expected to be cleared soon. This will provide great relief to the existing and retired employees of Dhariwal Mill. This is indeed a historic win.
