India-born Gurdarshan Mangat looking to extend his winning streak at ONE Championship

Mangat looks forward to visiting his roots in India

Kuala Lumpur, November 27: India-born Gurdarshan Mangat, who has placed the country on the Mixed Martial Arts map, will return to the ring on December 6 at ONE: MARK OF GREATNESS to meet Reece McLaren at the Axiata Arena here in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

For the child of Indian immigrants, who is an epitome of courage, the journey had not been easy. The loss of his cousin, who had introduced him to MMA during his growing years in Canada, hit the shy boy hard. Not only that, he had to battle asthma from a young age as well as a hernia in the days leading up to his contest with MMA veteran Abro Fernandes at the Axiata Arena in July.

“You know what it feels like when you cannot get air and your lungs are compressed. People do not know how much work and effort I put into my endurance and my training to be able to show up and put on that kind of performance. It does not just come naturally to me,” said Mangat.

The 32-year-old also honed his skills sparring alongside reigning ONE Bantamweight World Champion Bibiano Fernandes and ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix Champion Demetrious Johnson. And that helped him achieve a decision victory over Fernandes to improve to 2-0 with ONE Championship and 15-2 overall in his career with his other victory being over MMA veteran Toni Tauru.

Now that he has proven his worth twice with ONE Championship, Mangat, who put together a stellar 6-2 mark as an amateur coming up through the ranks, is upbeat about his upcoming fight.

When the youngster was pushed off the track by depression and loneliness, it was champion Vitor Belfort’s healing words which lifted him and restored his self-confidence. Mangat also benefited from working with a sports psychologist.

“Now I am actually enjoying my career, it is because of ONE Championship. The way it is all set up, I know how many people are watching and what I represent to them. It inspires me to produce my best and the fan support encourages me to give more every time I enter the ring,” said Mangat, who looks forward to visiting his roots in India.

Josh grew up in India and had a keen interest in music from a very early age. She always had a musical ear and a sweet and mellifluous voice. Despite the childhood interest and some early training, she became a professional musician much later after moving to the United States. She is currently settled in New Jersey, USA.

 Josh is trained in Hindustani classical music under Guruji Surendra. She also considers Kavita Krishnamurthy as one of the most important musical influences in her life and has attended numerous workshops under her.

 Josh has recorded across a wide variety of genres. Her debut album “Jiya” was recorded with Ustaad Hidayat Hussain Khan. She followed this up with a set of four original singles with music director Abhishek Ray. Two of the singles have been released by Zee Music with viewership in excess of one million.

 Currently, she is in the process of releasing her latest single Challa Diamond Da. This single has been composed of very eminent musicians from Bollywood. The lyrics have been penned by Kumaar and the music has been composed by Rochak Kohli both of whom are very prominent and have recorded multiple hits in the past. The video has been choreographed by Ganesh Acharya who is the prominent choreographer in Bollywood. Manav Gohil, a well-known actor and model costars in the video. The video was shot in Filmcity and will be released by Zee Music.

The Godrej India Culture Lab invites you to The Mumbai Finale of the Festival of Video Art by Indian Contemporary Artists on Saturday, 30th November 2019.

The Festival of Video Art by Indian Contemporary Artists (VAICA) is the first-of-its-kind event on video art as a form in India. Indian artists have been using, experimenting with and exploring video art as a medium for artistic expression for some years now. This festival aims to celebrate this art form by bringing together artists, cultural critics, students of art and media and art lovers to see some of the most exciting video art in the country.

The evening will showcase video artworks that seek to evoke a range of emotions. The themes explored in the artworks range from pieces that depict dreamscapes or fantasies as well as the transformation of physical sites. The artwork displayed will manipulate the medium of text, graphics and animation and artworks that comment on the brutality of an increasingly intolerant India. These screenings will be followed by a conversation between Amrita Gupta Singh, Anjali Monteiro and V. Diwakar moderator by Anuj Daga in which they will respond to the artworks and will discuss video art as an emerging art form.

The festival is parallel to the Godrej India Culture Lab’s ongoing work on questioning what it means to be modern and Indian. The Lab involves academics, activists, employees, artists, filmmakers and a diverse audience to become participants in finding the answer to this relevant question: ‘how does the past inform the present?’ Through this collaboration, the Lab will explore multiple answers to this complex question while amplifying the artists’ work in this unique format.

Mantra, a renowned stage, and film Actor, Television presenter will be seen essaying the role of Najib-ad-Daulah in Ashutosh Gowariker's next, Panipat, with Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Kapoor and Kriti Sanon.  

Mantra bagged the role in the period film when Director Ashutosh Gowariker spotted Mantra essaying the iconic character of 'Genie' at Disney India's hit Broadway Musical "Aladdin". We spoke to Mantra on his character as Najib-ad-daulah and here is what he has to say, "It was an amazing character and it was a long cherished dream to work with Ashutosh sir. He is simply tremendous. We have all put our heart and soul into the film. It is a very tough character as Najib-ad-Daulah is malleable and cunning at the same time. Hoping I have done justice to the character, I am waiting for the audience's reaction on the long-awaited spectacle"
