Praja Foundation released a National Manifesto on Transforming Urban Governance: Reforms and Recommendations
Over the last 26 years, Praja Foundation has been working towards enabling accountable governance. We conduct data-driven research nationwide, focusing on urban governance, and civic issues in cities of Mumbai & Delhi and engage with citizens & youth through various programmes and initiatives. We collaborate with government administration and elected representatives (ERs) for their capacity building, to equip them with our data and advocate for urban governance reforms to make citizens' lives better.
As India undergoes rapid urbanisation, more and more people are going to live in urban settlements. To enable economic development as well as provide good urban life, it is essential to reform the current governance structures of cities. Praja's Transforming Urban Governance recommendations outline key reforms needed to empower city governments and unlock their potential. These reforms address three crucial questions:
1. Who is in charge of governing cities?
2. What resources do they have for governance?
3. How citizens can be engaged in governance?
Additional Recommendations:
- City governments should adopt Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Climate Action Plans for a structured approach to guide their development efforts.
- Gender-responsive policies are crucial for addressing the specific needs and challenges faced by different genders in society.
