World Trade Centre & Aanchal Gupta Kalantri celebrated Women’s Day

World Trade Centre & Aanchal Gupta Kalantri celebrated Women’s Day by raising awareness on health, financial security and legal rights.

World Trade Centre, Mumbai organised a unique, informative & interactive program for International Women’s Day, with expert voices on diverse topics, called “Women- Wellness & Wealth”. The program was curated & moderated by Ms Aanchal Gupta Kalantri, Life Coach & Founder, of Decoding Life with Aanchal. It discussed and offered solutions to challenges faced by women in matters of health, mental & physical, financial decision-making & planning, and legal rights as well as on the esoteric subject of manifestation & vision boards.

Health and wellness-related challenges are the major barriers to women’s contribution to the Indian economy, which is hardly 17% even though they account for 50% of the population.

Emphasizing the theme of the program, Aanchal Gupta Kalantri remarked, “Today, most women, despite education, struggle with hectic routines, family & societal pressures & stigmas. We find it difficult to achieve a balance between ambitions & career aspirations, family planning, taking charge of our financial future, knowing our legal rights in India on everything from inheritance to per-nuptials, and then maintaining physical & mental sanity amidst all of this. This program has been specially curated to help everyone from adolescent girls, to retired women, to navigate through health crises, manage personal finances, or seek advice on legal rights, in order to lead a secure & happy life”

She hosted distinguished speakers, Ms Nirmala Samant- Former Mayor of Mumbai, Ms Nita Shivdasani- MD Waterfield Investments, Dr Ankesh Sahetya- Obstetrician and Reproductive Endocrinologist (Infertility), Ms Nipa Asharam- Certified Life & Health Coach, Ms Rupali Gujrathi Sharma- Founder Women Icons of India, Rahil Parmar - Associate Partner Lifeline Prime Investment LLP who shared insights on their respective subjects.

Specifically, there is a strong need to promote women entrepreneurs in the manufacturing and services sector to bridge the gender gap and boost GDP growth. According to the “Mastercard Index of Women Entrepreneurs 2021”, India ranks 57th out of 65 countries in women entrepreneurship. In order to promote women’s entrepreneurship, there is a need to improve women’s access to quality healthcare facilities and finance.

The share of women-owned firms in the MSME sector has grown from 15% in 2020 to more than 37% as of December 2023. Similarly, women’s participation in the labour force has grown from 32% in 2020 to 37% by 2023. At the same time, women continue to remain under-represented as they account for hardly 18% of manufacturing employment.

Emphasising the need to bridge the gender gap in economic activity, Dr. Vijay Kalantri, Chairman, MVIRDC WTC Mumbai remarked, “India has envisioned a USD 30 trillion economy by 2047, which can be attained only with equal participation of women in the manufacturing & service sectors. We need to conduct such capacity-building programs and knowledge sessions on women’s mental and physical well-being to improve their productivity and economic contribution”

Highlighting the significance of women’s empowerment in the nation’s progress, Ms. Rupa Naik, Executive Director, MVIRDC WTC Mumbai remarked, “A community is only as strong as the health of a woman. Mental and physical well-being is a major enabler for women’s participation in the economy and sustainable development. This program will empower women with effective tips to cope with their day-to-day health challenges and mental stress to lead a productive life.”

Breaking Barriers, Building Futures: Dolphin Tanki by Salaam Bombay Foundation Continues to Empower Budding Entrepreneurs from Resource-Challenged Backgrounds

Salaam Bombay Foundation (SBF), a non-profit organisation empowering resource-challenged adolescents, in collaboration with the School of Business Management at NMIMS, is proud to announce the third edition of 'Dolphin Tanki' - the flagship platform of the Foundation’s Entrepreneurship Incubator for Grassroots Adolescents. Dolphin Tanki is a part of Salaam Bombay Foundation’s Entrepreneurship Incubator and these programmes have been recognised as a youth centric solution by Yuwaah India at Unicef and 10to19 Dasra Adolescents Collaborative as part of their Joint Call For Solutions Initiative. Slated to take place on 16th March 2024 in Mumbai, the third edition of Dolphin Tanki will showcase a new cohort of resource-challenged budding entrepreneurs with incisive business ideas across sectors including Beauty & Wellness, Bakery & Confectionary, Electrical and Electronics Appliance Repair, Photography, Choreography and Fitness. These aspiring entrepreneurs have been mentored by students of SBM, NMIMS, via the ‘We Care – Civic Engagement Internship’ program ensuring a collaborative learning experience that promises to transcend boundaries.

Till date, over 150 adolescent entrepreneurs have been nurtured via the Entrepreneurship Incubator since its launch in July 2021. Trained beneficiaries (SBF’s vocational skill development programme) showcasing a potential to earn are selected for the Incubator. As first steps, they are nurtured, groomed, mentored (by industry experts, established entrepreneurs), and taught business acumen. They are also introduced to critical strategies like digital marketing and digital payments. As and when these entrepreneurs are ready to scale their businesses they are mentored and groomed by students from the School of Business Management, NMIMS via the ‘We Care – Civic Engagement Internship’ program. The entrepreneurs are then ready to pitch at Dolphin Tanki. Post winning, the entrepreneurs continue to receive handholding guidance and support from SBF.

Commenting on the event, Mr. Gaurav Arora, Chief Growth Officer and Sr. VP, Salaam Bombay Foundation, said, “At Salaam Bombay Foundation, we believe in nurturing every dream, ensuring that no aspiration goes unnoticed. By catering to the entrepreneurial needs of adolescents aged 16-20, we bridge the gap often overlooked by the larger entrepreneurship ecosystem. Initiatives like 'Dolphin Tanki' are transformative, empowering young entrepreneurs like Pooja Gupta aged 18 from Bhandup. Through this program, she secured INR 40,000 in funding support, enabling her to establish her makeup and hair artist venture in 2019, and dreams to open her own Make-Up studio. By investing in the entrepreneurial potential of young people, we believe in creating a better future, as our programs exemplify the power of youth to drive positive social change.”

Dr. Meena Galliara, Director, Jasani Center for Social Entrepreneurship & Sustainability Management, SBM, NMIMS said, Dolphin Tanki is an event that celebrates innovation and provides opportunity for budding entrepreneurs between 16 to 20 years from resource-poor communities to set up their business. With ingenuity and the right support, these startups can become the engines of progress, lifting themselves and their communities. The event is a step towards developing inclusion in the Startup India movement”.

 About Salaam Bombay Foundation:

Salaam Bombay Foundation started in 2002 to work with 12- to 18-year-old adolescent children growing up in Mumbai’s slums. These children live in extreme poverty and in “at risk” environments. The municipal schools they go to do not have the resources to give them individual attention, career guidance or access to activities that stimulate the mind.

Many are undernourished and face the risk of substance abuse. They come from financially challenged homes and are pressured to drop out of secondary school and seek jobs to support their families. Given these ground realities, Salaam Bombay Foundation has harnessed the ability of child- friendly, innovative education tools to develop life skills and coping skills necessary to ensure that these adolescents develop into well rounded personalities, able to meet the challenges they face and take on leadership roles within their communities.

The Foundation keeps children in school by empowering them to make the right choices about their health, education and livelihood thereby ensuring that they can thrive with a bright future. In-school leadership and advocacy programmes equip "at-risk" adolescents with the life skills they need to lead change. The Sports, Arts and Media academies encourage them to express themselves and provide performance opportunities that build self-esteem. The skills@school programme broadens their career horizons and empowers them with vocational skills for sustainable careers.

Through its DreamLab initiative, SBF, has provided for a continuum of skills training and market-based internships to youngsters in the age group of 14 and 18 years. Launched in July 2019, DreamLab, has been able to furnish stipend-based internships to hundreds of skills@school alumni across nine job sectors. DreamLab also creates a talent pool of grassroot entrepreneurial adolescents. Salaam Bombay initiatives increase confidence, give vulnerable adolescents the means to earn part-time and stay in school, and provide the tools to explore their full potential.

Through the different academies at Salaam Bombay Foundation, we work on the key areas under CSR Schedule VII - Preventive Health, Mental Wellbeing, Vocational Skills, Sports, Arts, and Media for the underprivileged adolescent from urban slums of India.

India, Europe’s EFTA Free Trade Pact to Triple Gem & Jewellery Exports: GJEPC

THE GEM AND JEWELLERY EXPORT PROMOTION COUNCIL

India, Europe’s EFTA Free Trade Pact to Triple Gem & Jewellery Exports: GJEPC

 The Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) between India and EFTA is expected to significantly enhance gem and jewellery exports to Switzerland, Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein from its current USD 335 million to USD 1 billion in the coming years.

 Eliminated customs duties on the entire chapter 71 (Gem and Jewellery products) enabling Indian exporters of G&J to have a duty free access in all the EFTA countries.  India-EFTA $100 bn FTA Indicates potential and paves the way for more & larger FTAs with European countries

The Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) between India and European Free Trade Association (EFTA) has opened immense opportunities for Indian gem and jewellery (G&J) sector to enhance its exports to the untapped EFTA countries especially to Switzerland. EFTA countries have removed customs duties on the entire chapter 71 (Gem and Jewellery products) enabling Indian exporters of G&J to have a duty free access in all the EFTA countries - Switzerland, Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein.

Vipul Shah, Chairman, GJEPC said, “I extend my gratitude to the Government of India, particularly to Shri Piyush Goyal, Hon’ble Minister of Commerce & Industry, for incorporating GJEPC’s recommendations in the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA). The $100 bn bilateral trade pact has opened up immense opportunities for Indian gem and jewellery manufacturers to broaden their export prospects in the EFTA region. It will also pave the way for new and larger FTAs with many other European countries. I am sure that exports of gem and jewellery products to EFTA group will scale up from US$335 million to at least US$1 billion in the coming times. I believe there is a huge scope for exporting fine gold jewellery and silver jewellery with high gloss and matte finishes, as well as luxurious diamond and coloured gemstone jewellery.”

GJEPC had closely worked with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry during the negotiations of this momentous agreement with EFTA group. The GJEPC recommended HS line-wise (at 8 digit level) stance pertaining to offerings/ requests to be made to the EFTA group in the light of best interest of the whole industry. EFTA’s total imports of finished Gem & Jewellery products are at US$12.3 billion and from India its imports are merely at US$335 million (India’s share is 2.7% in EFTA total imports of G&J from World) leaving a vast scope for Indian manufacturers and exporters to enhance its exports to the untapped EFTA markets.

Relaxations for EFTA group w.r.t gem and jewellery sector are as follows:

Imports of the following products from EFTA countries in India would be duty free at the end of 5 years, 7 years or 10 years meaning thereby duties on the following products would be eliminated in equal instalments over a period of 5/7/10 years.

o Natural/Cultured Pearls – Worked and Unworked

o Rough diamonds – Natural

o Precious and Semiprecious coloured gemstones – Unworked

o Polished Synthetic stones.

o Dust and Powder of Diamonds and Stones

 Customs duty on the imports of the following products from EFTA has been reduced

from 5% to 2.5% to be eliminated in 5 equal annual instalments

 Cut and Polished Diamonds

 Precious and Semiprecious coloured gemstones – Worked

 Lab grown diamonds -polished

 The most important is reduction of duty by 1% from Bound Rate on precious metal

gold imports from EFTA countries

 PSRs are  in line with the FTP norms and feasible
