‘Organ Donors’ Wall of Remembrance unveiled at Apollo Navi Mumbai

‘Organ Donors’ Wall of Remembrance unveiled at Apollo Navi Mumbai

Rajesh Narvekar, Commissioner, NMMC, and Milind Bharambe, Commissioner of Police, Navi Mumbai were present on this momentous occasion

Navi Mumbai, 3 August 2023: On the occasion of Indian Organ Donation Day, Apollo Hospitals, Navi Mumbai (AHNM), a leading multi-specialty quaternary care hospital, today unveiled a unique wall of remembrance to honor deceased organ donors who have given the gift of life to patients with end-stage organ disease. The hospital paid tribute to the deceased donors and felicitated their families. The event was graced by Chief Guests, Shri Rajesh Narvekar, Commissioner, NMMC, and Shri Milind Bharambe, Commissioner of Police, Navi Mumbai.

Mr. Santosh Marathe, Regional CEO – Western Region, Apollo Hospitals said, “AHNM runs a very active transplant program covering liver, kidney and heart transplants. 20% of the cases undertaken at AHNM as of date are from deceased organ donation. The Wall of Remembrance in memory of the deceased organ donors will not only honor their generous act but also encourage people to volunteer for organ donation. The Wall is a testament to the courage and benevolence of the families of these donors who had a catastrophic and irreversible brain injury leading to brain death. It is a difficult decision for the family to donate the organs of their loved ones and we are grateful that they made the noble choice of giving the gift of life. One donor can save the life of up to 8 patients. Supporting this cause at every step, I am happy and proud to announce that more than 137 staff from our hospital have pledged to donate their organs. We hope that the Wall of Remembrance will motivate more individuals and families to pledge to donate organs after death and spread awareness about the importance of organ donation.”

Prof. Darius Mirza, Lead Consultant Liver & HPB Programme, Apollo Hospitals, Western Region said, “The life-saving power of organ transplants in patients affected by terminal organ failures is unmatched. The need for donor organs far outweighs the available supply, and organ shortage is the ultimate challenge to the wider availability of life-saving organ transplantation. Donation after brain death (DBD) remains one of the primary sources for organ transplants in most countries. However, in 2021, only about 14% were cadaveric donors. In view of the increasing gap between organs required for transplants and organs donated, it is extremely important to spread awareness about organ donation. At Apollo Hospitals, we are grateful to have been at the forefront of organ transplantation and witness the transformative power of deceased organ donation, where lives are saved and renewed, where hope is restored, and where families find solace in knowing that their loved ones live on.”

Shri Rajesh Narvekar, Commissioner, NMMC said, “On the occasion of Indian Organ Donation Day, I would like to salute the selfless deeds of organ donors and their families. This Wall of Remembrance will no doubt go a long way in promoting organ donation in India. Organ donation is a precious gift of life, transforming moments of despair into rays of hope.”

Shri Milind Bharambe, Commissioner of Police, Navi Mumbai said,“The Navi Mumbai police have been supporting medical professions in their efforts to transplant organs and save lives. We have helped to create green corridors so that the harvested organs reach the recipients swiftly and hope that our efforts have helped the transplant surgeons save lives and give hope to the families of the patients. I am sure that this Wall of Remembrance will encourage people to register as organ donors.”

The solid organ transplant program at Apollo Hospitals, which covers heart, lung, kidney, and liver transplants, consists of specialized transplant teams that work incessantly to save lives. They provide personalized and all-encompassing care to patients, implementing a unified strategy that results in a success rate of 99.9% for kidney transplants and 94% for liver transplants. These impressive figures at par with the best in the world, underscore the team's commitment and the advanced medical technology they utilize. It results in accelerated recovery and enhanced postoperative outcomes, including effective pain management and rapid scar healing. Notably, the life-saving transplant operations continued throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, thanks to the rigorous infection control measures in place.

Monsoon is the favourite season of many however it also brings with it a fair share of skincare challenges. To keep the skin happy, plump, and glowing, &TV artists share their best-kept secret for monsoon skincare regimes. It becomes greasy, resulting in acne, clogged pores, blackheads, and whiteheads. To combat this, the home cure I use is a face pack made from Pomegranate seeds, which are high in anti-ageing ingredients like antioxidants and vitamin C, which rejuvenate dull skin. I combine two teaspoons of pomegranate seeds and one cup of raw oats. Pour into a mixing bowl with two tablespoons of honey and buttermilk. Apply for a few minutes on my face, then rinse. It aids in the removal of dead skin cells, the rejuvenation of the skin, and the removal of excess oil.”

Manisha Arora,
aka Mahua from Doosri Maa, shares, “Monsoon is all about pleasant feelings and having fun while drenching in the rain in the middle of nature. But all of this affects your skin, so it is critical to protect it. I use a homemade scrub twice a week to exfoliate my skin. The scrub contains some oatmeal, orange peel, and red lentil powder mixed with the help of rose water. I apply it on the skin until semi-dry. Then I scrub my face for a few minutes before washing it with ice water. The results are stunning. I highly recommend this to all readers who want to keep their skin glowing.” Vidisha Srivastava, aka Anita Bhabi from Bhabhiji Ghar Par Hai, shares, “Monsoon season can be harsh on our skin, and with so much moisture all around, it's critical to keep it clean and fuss-free. That is why I like to utilize my skincare routine. A simple yet effective facial scrub made with two teaspoons of sea salt, one tablespoon of fresh lemon juice, and a few drops of olive oil is my go-to solution for clean and clear skin. I use this scrub to remove excess grime and oil from my face, leaving it refreshed and invigorated.”

Addressing the attendees  Vicky Kaushal said, “I would like to extend many thanks and gratitude to Jewellers for Hope and The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council for recognising and supporting a cause which is so close to my heart - Relief Projects India (RPI).  I am extremely proud of the work that RPI has put in over the years for their education programme - Mountain View School, which is dedicated to providing quality education and a safe environment to all underprivileged kids in the area. The Jewellers for Hope is a distinguished gathering of entrepreneurs, exporters and companies, which make a positive difference. Tonight we come together to transcend boundaries to protect the rights of women; to promote the girl child’s education and overall strive for gender equality. We, at GIA, have been making a difference in the lives of women to support them with knowledge, which helps to estimate the correct value of diamonds. GIA’s association with GJEPC dates back many years and through the Jewellers for Hope initiative, we started an initiative last year to educate female students and will be extending this chapter to Mumbai and Surat. The efforts of GJEPC, Jewellers for Hope and GIA may be drops in the ocean but to quote a famous poet, the ocean would miss something if these drops were not there!”

One of the evening's highlights was the spirited bidding round for an exclusive dinner with industry stalwarts Mr C K Venkataraman, Managing Director at Titan Company, and Mr Paul Rowley, Executive Vice President, Diamond Trading, De Beers Group. The auction, led by Mr  C K Venkataraman, raised a staggering amount, dedicated to supporting the Nanhi Kali initiative.
