Ranjha Vikram Singh is married to ladylove Simran Kaur

Ranjha Vikram Singh has got into wedlock with fashion designer Simran Kaur who hails from Ludhiana. He met Simran through a family friend and it would be unfair to call it just an arranged marriage. They fell in love at first sight and the relationship developed during the pandemic over calls and video calls. That's been a beauty of technology and how it can really get people close. They tied the know in Chandigarh where their family stays with close family and friends. It's been an out and out love story. It's truly a marriage of two families and we can't be happier for the lovely couple. The celebrations were attended by close friend Urvashi Rautela, Gizelle Thakral, and a string of Punjabi stars. They had a ball dancing together and Urvashi had wished them really well as she was one of the first to come for the wedding.

We spoke to Ranjha on his wedding day and here is what he has to say, "It's been auspicious. I met her through a family friend and we have been just together ever since. She asked me to meet her family and I did that. Simran is a fashion designer and she didn't belong to our industry. The families met then on and we were just counting the days for the wedding. We were in touch via video calls and chats. Technology has been a great help. I thank all my friends and family who took time even during covid times to attend our wedding. With everyone's blessings, it's happening and we are now one big happy family. You know as they say, when it's time, it's time. So it was for us."

And they lived happily ever after and that would make such a lovely postscript. We leave that to them but they are one lovely family and our blessings and prayers are with the beautiful couple.

Thanks & Regards,

Access Health International and SafeCare join forces on transforming the quality of healthcare in India

10th December 2020, Hyderabad: ACCESS Health International (AHI), an India-based organization focused on improving access to high quality and affordable healthcare, has joined hands with SafeCare, a globally renowned company which provides innovative health care standards; surveyor training; a grading system for the quality of care to bring Health Standards to India.

In the last decade, India has made big strides in providing better access to healthcare for its 1 billion-plus citizens. However, the quality of that care remains a key challenge in reaching universal health coverage by 2030, a globally agreed goal of the United Nations.

According to a 2016 Lancet report, poor quality of care leads to almost twice as many deaths as insufficient access to healthcare, 1.6 million deaths compared to 838,000 respectively It is thus crucial to address both these issues.

However, there is a lack of certification and accreditation bodies offering local solutions for emerging markets. How, for example, can a rural clinic in India meet the same requirements as a city hospital, given the differences in resources and training?

As a result of this weak regulatory framework, patients and payers of health care face uncertainty regarding the availability and quality of service. In turn, this hampers health sector investments as patients are not willing to prepay for healthcare through insurance.

Commenting on the association Dr. Krishna Reddy Head Access Health International India said “  We have teamed up with SafeCare, a standards-based, digital quality improvement platform with experience in sub-Saharan Africa, to address this issue. In this international South-South partnership, AHI provides facilities with the IIEA (International Society for Quality in Health Care External Evaluation Association) accredited standards-based methodology by SafeCare that empowers healthcare providers to measure, monitor, and improve the quality of their services, with the aim to expand nationwide”

“ The SafeCare standards provide an objective, holistic view of medical and non-medical service provision of hospitals and laboratories, transparent and achievable quality improvement goals and a staged motivating and monitoring system.  The tools are online and mobile-centric. Health professionals can benefit from interactive, real-time quality management and monitoring platform that aids informed decision-making and hence better health outcomes. It also standardizes the methodology of measurement across healthcare facilities ” said Dr. Aafke de Graaff, Head of SafeCare, Amsterdam

“ Patients know what quality of care to expect at a certain facility, funders have data to assess the medical, financial, and accountability risks when considering long-term investments and insurance companies can see which providers their customers use to give better value for money “ she further added

“ At a policy level, data on quality and risks assist the government in its choices about how to best allocate its scarce resources. In this respect, Access Health International and SafeCare can truly transform the quality landscape in India to create sustainable improvement and provide health for all”  Dr. Krishna Reddy Head Access Health International India added

About SafeCare: SafeCare was developed to provide innovative health care standards; surveyor training; a grading system for the quality of care; a quality improvement process that is broken down into achievable, measurable steps to facilitate incremental improvement; and a private sector-supported health financing model. At SafeCare, we believe everyone has the right to access quality healthcare. And we know that healthcare facilities around the world can be inspired to improve the quality and safety of the services they provide, despite the resource constraints they may face.

About Access Healthcare International: ACCESS Health is a think tank, advisory group, and implementation partner. We design and implement health initiatives that tangibly improve health outcomes and the quality of care across the globe. We turn research into tangible healthcare improvements through unique partnerships with policymakers, private sector leaders, academia, and entrepreneurs. We conduct practical research to improve health systems and healthcare delivery and share best practices that can be adopted and adapted worldwide.

The True Opportunity of Restoring India’s

Land for Climate and Communities

Restoring 75% of the land in Sidhi District, Madhya Pradesh could create thousands of jobs and small businesses while fighting climate change. WRI India and the Government of Madhya Pradesh have signed an MOU to help local communities restore more land, faster.

Mumbai /Bhopal, December 9, 2020: Nearly 700 million people in India depend on forests and agriculture for sustenance. The livelihoods of these people are at risk: Climate change could reduce agricultural income by up to 25% annually, leaving more than 50% of the workforce vulnerable. But that damage isn’t irreversible. About 140 million hectares — nearly half of India’s territory — could benefit from protecting forests and restoring land.

A new report from WRI India, Restoring Landscapes in India for Climate and Communities, quantifies that opportunity for the climate-vulnerable but impoverished Sidhi district in Madhya Pradesh. By adapting the Restoration Opportunities Assessment Methodology (ROAM) to assess the environmental, social, and economic benefits that restoration can bring, researchers analyzed the ecosystem services and livelihood benefits of restoration, while taking land tenure, gender, and social inclusion into account.

The analysis found that:

·         Restoring 75% of the District’s land could create 3.75 million paid working days for local people and almost INR 1.3 billion (USD19 million) of extra income from wages and sale of saplings.

·         There is potential to sequester more than 7 million tons of carbon in forests within 20 years, conserving biodiversity and controlling erosion.

·         Building 3,000 restoration micro-enterprises that sell high-value tree crops like bamboo, jackfruit, amla (Indian gooseberries), and moringacould create 30,000 jobs.

·         A healthy landscape can fulfill critical local demands by providing food, fuelwood, fodder, and non-timber forest produce for dependent communities, controlling soil erosion, and conserving biodiversity.

·         People from traditionally marginalized groups, including women, unemployed youth, and landless people, stand to benefit.

The report also analyzes the social landscape of the district: the key people and organizations that govern the flow of information and funds, hold authority, and spur and mediate the conflict. By understanding actor-network relationships, researchers found civil society organizations, local research universities need to be at the forefront to drive the restoration agenda in the district along with the state actors. Findings also indicate that while women and members of India’s marginalized Scheduled Tribes and Castes implement restoration, they are seldom key decision-makers and mechanisms will have to be designed that benefits can flow to them. Bringing their insights and restoration priorities to the table will be key to achieving the true economic and environmental opportunity.

A Partnership to Restore More Land, Faster

On November 9, the Department of Panchayat and Rural Development (DP&RD), the Government of Madhya Pradesh (MP), and WRI India signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop a collaborative plan for realizing the total potential of restoring Sidhi’s landscape. Under the MoU, the DP&RD and WRI India aim to leverage the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS), Madhya Pradesh State Rural Livelihoods Mission (MPSRLM), and other initiatives in the livelihoods, infrastructure development, tribal welfare, and panchayat sectors. This work will help the Government of India’s meet its international commitments, including its nationally determined contribution (NDC) to the Paris Climate Agreement, its Bonn Challenge and Land Degradation Neutrality targets to restore 26 million hectares of land, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

WRI India and DP&RD agreed that restoration should strive to 1) Align with the goals of various government departments to show the breadth of what restoration can achieve, 2) Improve land productivity and address land-use challenges by restoring critical ecosystem services such as biodiversity, soil, and water; and 3) To put people, especially women, at the center of planning and implementing restoration projects.

By learning from these lessons, local decision-makers around the world during the upcoming UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030) can build inclusive systems to manage land that maximize economic opportunities and create value for the most marginalized people.

Quotes:

MrManoj Shrivastava, Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Panchayat and Rural Development, Government of Madhya Pradesh:

“We want to develop a holistic, comprehensive, and composite approach to restoration that brings together Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, State Rural Livelihoods Mission (SRLM), Swachh Bharath Mission, and watershed work. Sidhi has faced degradation and lost ecosystem services. Landscape restoration has the potential to establish a circular economy in the district based on recycling, remodeling, and reconfiguring natural resources that have been disturbed People will be at the center-stage for this collaboration. We will have the help of SRLM and change will come in a gender-specific way; women will be at the forefront of restoration. Many initiatives will be taken with the help of self-help groups, cluster-level federations, and village organizations.”

Dr. OP Agarwal, CEO, WRI India:

“WRI India’s motivation for designing projects is to see implementation and change on the ground. Realizing the true opportunity of restoring landscapes will take investment and perseverance. That is why we are delighted to be working with the Government of Madhya Pradesh to restore prosperity and rural jobs in Sidhi. Now, it’s time to replicate this approach to landscapes throughout India – and around the world – during the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030).”

Mr. R. Parasuram, former Chief Secretary, Government of Madhya Pradesh and Senior Fellow, WRI India:

“WRI India has been an active partner in designing and implementing landscape restoration at the global level. This MoU between Madhya Pradesh’s Department of Panchayat and Rural Development and WRI India, for the implementation of landscape restoration, has the potential to become a game-changer in the management of natural resources. Given a history of out-migration of its rural poor, this project in Sidhi can help expand rural livelihood opportunities within the district in addition to addressing land degradation and retention of soil moisture for rain-fed agriculture.”

Dr Ruchika Singh, Director, Sustainable Landscapes and Restoration, WRI India, and Marie Duraisami, Manager, Sustainable Landscapes and Restoration, WRI India

“Our learnings from Sidhi showcase a path forward for more synergistic planning at the landscape level, which can unlock the potential of nature-based solutions at scale, with people at the center driving the projects. India has an immense opportunity for landscape restoration in more than 100 million hectares where trees can be grown within different land-uses for climate action. This has been assessed through an interactive, web-based platform that showcases priority areas. There are multiple benefits from landscape restoration as the study findings indicate. To unlock this potential, mechanisms will have to be designed so that benefits can flow to the people, especially marginalized men and women, in the landscapes.”

COVID-19 spread will continue' - The Hindu

Dr.Krishna Reddy Nallamalla, Country Director, ACCESS Health India.

Understanding Vaccine Effectiveness

There has been a flurry of press releases on vaccine effectiveness. There is a risk of misunderstanding these numbers by lay people. Multiple factors influence the risk of developing Covid-19 illness. These include

innate immunity (first defense response when the body is exposed to any foreign organism),

potential cross-immunity from prior exposure to other coronaviruses that cause the common cold,

quantum of virus exposure, whether a person is following containment measures like face masking,

hand hygiene

and

social distancing, age, gender, presence of other comorbidities, and the degree of immune response mounted by a person.

It is also important to understand whether the vaccine is effective in preventing the development of illness, reducing duration of hospitalization, need for ventilation, or death. For example, chloroquine was demonstrated not effective in either preventing infection or reducing the severity of illness. Remedesivir was effective in reducing only duration of hospitalization and was not effective in preventing progression to ventilation or death. Whereas steroid drugs were the only ones effective in reducing deaths in patients with falling oxygen levels.

To demonstrate effectiveness, vaccines are compared with a placebo (a formulation that is inert but looks like the vaccine). For example, in a study vaccine is given to 20,000 healthy people and a placebo is given to another 20,000 healthy people. All people are followed up meticulously. Some of these people may develop Covid-19 over a period of time. Supposing 100 (0.5%) people who received a placebo and 10 (0.05%) people who received a vaccine develop Covid-19 illness, it implies that vaccine might have prevented Covid-19 illness in 90 more people out of 100 at risk of developing, translating to 90% effectiveness.

Another caveat is that people in both groups should compare well in terms of other variables that can influence development of illness. These include gender, age, presence of comorbidities, socio-economic status, living conditions, face masking, geography, etc. Randomization methods adopted by all vaccine studies will, in general, ensure comparability of both the groups.

While effectiveness is one of the measures, how long the protection lasts is yet to be answered. Whether the duration varies with type of vaccine – mRNA, virus vector (human or simian adenovirus), inactivated virus, component, attenuated vaccine – is also not yet known. How each vaccine behaves when the virus mutates will also vary depending upon the type of vaccine.

Vaccines also differ in their cost, route of administration, number of doses, and temperature stability.
